Paul Philp
Paul Philp has been a ceramicist for forty years. He does not coil or use slabs, each piece is built by hand. A slow process, but one which allows the work to evolve naturally.
The eroded surface is achieved by the inclusion of various different substances to the surface of the vessel. This variation of surface colour and treatment makes each piece unique. He often combines a mixture of clays which, because of the different striking ratios, cause cracking and fissures. Ceramic colours are used only with restraint. Experiments with different forms of crude iron, often combined with tin oxide, have resulted in a range of extraordinary deep red surfaces.
Paul’s ceramic forms are in permanent collections in the Musee des Beaux Art, Montreal and Musee de Ceramique in Sevres France, as well as numerous private collections.
