Katie Sargeant

Katie Sargent is a UK-based ceramic artist working with hand-built stoneware forms. Based in Wiltshire, her practice sits comfortably between rural studio making and the quiet, material-led gallery contexts of Bath.

She studied Contemporary Sculpture at the University of Northumbria before a lengthy career in art education, returning to her own studio practice in 2022 at Messums Studios under Mirka Golden-Hann.

Her work moves between text-based ceramic pieces and vessels marked by slow, repetitive spiral mark-making. Words and short phrases are impressed directly into clay, functioning less as statements than as presences, held with tenderness and tension.

Alongside this, spiral works painted one line at a time using natural oxides use repetition and rhythm to hold attention where language falls away. Across both bodies of work, her ceramics explore containment, proximity, and the quiet weight of what is said, and unsaid.
